Scotweb2 event for local government ?

If we did one of these, who would like to attend ?

Peterborough hosted the first ; perhaps Glasgow, Hamilton, Edinburgh, Inverness the first in Scotland ?

I have been banging away for years at goverment that open source is the key to reducing their budgets. for example the licencing costs for say a server and 250 client connects are astoundingly expensive. Whereas a linux box will give you just that and run on lot less proccy etc.

I was talking to some bank IT guys at a party a few weeks ago, still ingrained with mircosyths scare stories of apps not working, lost man hours etc. What the hell! You can dload open office, for example and train people in an hour, it usually consists of the words, open word processor. SEE IT’S NOT THAT DIFFERENT! , Carry on!

think of it, the amount the Scottish goverment has wasted on uncesarry apps and licencing, because some IT only memorised so questions to a mcse test and knows sod all about actual posix computing.Hate those gimpy gits! I asked one after exclaiming he was an mcse to pass me a NIc and he was clueless, one I walked in on, on a shift had spent 8 hours of his shift attempting too hook up a pc to a network with no TCP/IP installed, then took the huff when I showed him he forgot to install a protocol driver!

Also the microsoft way of volume licencing is costly and ineficient. They say if you have xyz mcirosyth qualified personell you can get x amount of licences discount , if not we’ll charge you lots of money to train someone to memorise some questions……

Btw, The Company I work for has been installing linuc systems since 1994 and is the main pusher of such pimping systems.

Having designed a few high end systems and networks for architects, electronics cos, waste disposal firms, etc , guess what their still running with little intervention! Take that MS!
